What is an ONU device?

ONU (Optical Network Unit) optical network unit, ONU is divided into active optical network unit and passive optical network unit. Generally, devices equipped with network monitoring including optical receivers, upstream optical transmitters, and multiple bridge amplifiers are called optical nodes. The PON uses a single optical fiber to connect to the OLT, and then the OLT connects to the ONU. ONU provides services such as data, IPTV (i.e. interactive network television), and voice (using IAD, i.e. Integrated Access Device), truly realizing “triple-play” applications.

Features

Choose to receive the broadcast data sent by the OLT;

Respond to the ranging and power control commands issued by the OLT; and make corresponding adjustments;

Cache the user’s Ethernet data and send it to the upstream in the sending window allocated by the OLT;

Fully comply with IEEE 802.3/802.3ah;

·Receiving sensitivity is as high as -25.5dBm;

·Transmit power up to -1 to +4dBm;

PON uses a single optical fiber to connect to the OLT, and then the OLT connects to the ONU. ONU provides services such as data, IPTV (i.e. interactive network television), and voice (using IAD, i.e. Integrated Access Device), realizing “triple-play” applications;

·Highest rate PON: symmetrical 10Gb/s upstream and downstream data, VoIP voice and IP video services;

·ONU “plug and play” based on automatic discovery and configuration;

·Advanced quality of service (QoS) functions based on service level agreement (SLA) billing;

·Remote management capabilities supported by rich and powerful OAM functions;

·High sensitivity light receiving and low input light power consumption;

·Support Dying Gasp function;

Classification

Active light

The active optical network unit is mainly used when the three networks are integrated, and it integrates CATV full-band RF output; high-quality VOIP audio; three-layer routing mode, wireless access and other functions, which can easily realize the three-play integration terminal equipment access.

Passive light

Passive ONU (Optical Network Unit) is a user-side device of GEPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) system, which is used to terminate services transmitted from OLT (Optical Line Terminal) through EPON (Passive Optical Network). Cooperating with OLT, ONU can provide various broadband services to connected users. Such as Internet surfing, VoIP, HDTV, VideoConference and other services. ONU, as a user-side device for FTTx applications, is a high-bandwidth and cost-effective terminal device necessary for the transition from the “copper cable era” to the “optical fiber era”. As the ultimate solution for users’ wired access, GEPON ONU will play a pivotal role in the overall network construction of NGN (Next Generation Network) in the future.

UTStarcom ONU 1001i is a cost-effective user terminal equipment used in GEPON systems. It is designed for home users and SOHO users, and provides gigabit broadband connections for user gateways and/or PCs. ONU 1001i provides one 1000Base-TEthernet network port for data and IPTV video services. ONU1001i can be remotely configured and managed by UTStarcom BBS series optical line terminal (OLT).

application

The upstream of ONU 1001i is connected to the central office (CO) through the GEPON port, and the downstream is for individual users or SOHO users to provide 1 Gigabit Ethernet network port. As the future solution of FTTx, ONU 1001i provides powerful voice, high-speed data and video services through single-fiber GEPON.
